Tax in Ireland
STEP 1: Apply for a Personal Public Service (PPS) number:
You must visit in person the local Social Welfare office. Please phone 1890 333 425 for your nearest location.
The hours are Mon - Fri: 9.30am - 12.30pm and 2.00pm - 4.00pm.
- Complete a PPS application form (Form REG1).
- State the reason for the application i.e. commencing employment in Ireland.
- Identification: Birth certificate, Passport or National identity card. If you are a non-EU national, you will need to produce your work authorisation / visa or work permit.
It should take 7 - 10 days for the PPS number to be issued. You will need to revisit the office in person to collect and sign for your Social Services card (PPS number printed on it). STEP 2: Apply for a Certificate of Tax Free Allowances:
Once you have received your PPS number, you will now need to apply for your Certificate of Tax Free Allowances (Notice of Determination of Tax Credits and Standard Rate Cut off Point).
You will need to phone the Tax Revenue office at 1890 333 425, the hours are Mon - Fri: 9.15am - 5.30pm. They are closed for lunch from 12.45pm - 2.00pm and on Fridays close earlier at 5.15pm. Sometimes they will let you apply over the phone, if not, then request a Form 12A.
Once you have completed and returned this form, your Employer (Priority Placements) and yourself will receive a copy.
Please note that when you call the above Government office, you will need to have your PPS number on hand.
